BACKGROUND

Protecting Our Community
Thank you for visiting the official website of the Normal Firefighters Local 2442 Fire and EMS Coverage. Our mission is to safeguard lives, property, and the well-being of our neighbors through professional fire and emergency medical services. We are proud to serve this community with dedication, courage, and compassion - but today, we face serious challenges that demand your attention.

A System Under Strain
A recent study has confirmed what our members have experienced for years: Normal is facing a critical shortage of firefighters and apparatus necessary to respond effectively to emergencies. These shortages are not just numbers - they represent slower response times, increased risk to the public, and growing dangers to the firefighters who respond every day.

Since the last staffing increase in 2006, the Normal Fire Department has experienced an 89.1% increase in call volume - from 4,401 calls in 2006 to 8,322 calls today.

Falling Short of National Standards
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), communities of our size and risk profile should meet specific benchmarks for staffing, response times, and resource availability. Unfortunately, Normal is currently operating below many of these recognized standards - a situation that impacts everyone who lives, works, or visits here. (See: Codes and Standards)

Our Commitment - And Our Concern
The members of the Normal Firefighters Local 2442 remain fully committed to serving our community to the best of our ability, regardless of the circumstances. But we must also be honest with you: the current level of fire and EMS coverage is not sustainable - and it is not safe. We’ve raised these concerns repeatedly and in good faith with the town’s leadership. While we continue to seek constructive dialogue, the administration has not yet taken meaningful steps to address these critical gaps in service. (See: GIS Study)

Why This Matters
Emergency services are not a luxury - they are a lifeline. Whether it’s a structure fire, medical emergency, or rescue call, every second matters. We believe the community deserves to know the facts, and to have a voice in how we prepare for and respond to emergencies.
